Exhibition opening: Saturday, 5 July 2020, 5 pm

On the occasion of its 20th anniversary, the women's museum in Austria is dedicated to the theme of birth culture.

Birth concerns us all. Just like death, birth concerns every human being without exception. Dealing with birth and birth culture deals with the first and fundamental human transformation. This includes biological, psychological, social, political and spiritual dimensions.

Our exhibition makes the historical and cultural knowledge about birth visible and gives insight into the everyday and life culture of people - worldwide and across times and developments.

At the same time, it takes into account the present and the latest findings and technical achievements. These are pointed out and trends are critically examined (eg desired caesarean section, IVF, designer babies, etc.). Traditional midwifery knowledge is just as much in focus as today's obstetrics and reproductive medicine. Reports by contemporary witnesses (experts, mothers and fathers) and best-practice examples show how holistic and interdisciplinary obstetrics can combine both aspects. Contemporary art positions expand the topic with personal statements, new perspectives and more precise points of view.
